"In the tunnel traffic before exiting 64, you may catch a glimpse of Willoughby Inn briefly, Day's Inn, Hickey's, and prior to that: beloved Margaret's candy store, for some of us still called that." The original Willoughby Inn (photo above circa 1948) was located approximately where the electrical transformer (just west of) adjacent to the Willoughby Inn of today; back then the Inn was closer to Trails End and the Isaac Walton Gun Club. Margaret & Butch Ewell operated it as a sandwich and confectionary store, originally. Bobby Lebby provided the above image, which also appeared in the Ocean View Times.
More than 25 years ago, R K worked days --getting to know virtually every old Willoughby family worth meeting-- at the Inn: the Lebbys, Campbells, Martins, Singletons, Briggs, Thompsons, Tilghmans, Guynns, Schotts, Slacks, Waughs, Bobby Hazlette, Roger Johnson, Kenny Edes, Richard Bailey, et al. Others "Spitters" met at GHS and earlier, kept "Inn-Touch" are the Edmonds, Goodmans, Ewells, Reicherts, Wares, Yahns, Oakes, & Trujillos. We dearly miss Margaret Ewell, Bill Neff, Ollie Olsen, Ward (Collier's old running partner), Colonel Burckard & not least, 'Pop' Neathery.
A very good while back, his son wrote us about Col B-- so, we promised sooner or later we'd find and put a pix up here...
I'm guessing that was maybe five years back. Finding was the hard part. Thanks for your patience! --rk (7/7/07)
