About the Nickel Tour

rk@rkpuma.com

The TaylorsTurning left onto Pretty Lake from EOV Ave, brothers Donald and Jimmy Taylor ran Bay Marine throughout the 80's. Jimmy's still there assisting Michael Espejo with the busy full service marina. Here the Taylors (from left: sister Pat, Donald, Jimmy & Connie) host the first of many sizable parties.

You'll also find the Cutty Sark, a hole in the wall eatery, operated twenty years ago by Joyce Varnadore. George Bagoddas also had a floating restaurant, the Seabelle, in the 70's. He's also noted for having an O'Sullivans in EOV, once known as the Whing Ding (his son Buddy has the locals favorite on Colley). George is a real OV "pioneer"-- forty years ago he was the proprietor of the Purple Onion. Perhaps the only better known establishment from that era, was the legendary Jolly Roger (later the Brass Bell, see top photo with Pete's Place) located on the curve heading toward Shore Drive.

Remember Hurricane Bonnie? The morning after, we found Danny and Julie Ricks looking downright inconsolable in their (new) restaurant, Bay Point Grille because their power had gone off the night before and they were sweating, along with their inventory. Soon after, we got an email from Danny saying,

“I appreciate your time that day and have a bit of good news for you. I don't know if you remember my wife was pregnant when you stopped in, well, we just had a beautiful baby girl last week and are being kept very busy with that. Just thought I would spread the good news. If I can ever help you with anything or if you would like to stop in for lunch please call or come by.”

A more recent email from Danny indicates Lewis McGehee plays there on occasion.

Things are always going on at Taylor's Landing (8172 Shore Dr). Captain Alex retired, and long gone is Monroe Duncan's Calypso (and Piranha's). For a brief time, it even morphed as The Raven; and was operated recently by Freddie Chinchillo-- remember Freddie's at Chesapeake & Little Creek before it became Knickerbocker's? Now the Surf Rider has arrived. Going there helps you keep up with the progress of the new bridge construction. Also, look for the "Striped Bass (rockfish) Taylor’s Landing Thanksgiving Tournament" run by Taylor’s Landing Tackle Shop, in November.
