As most of us in the north end of Norfolk are aware, old GHS
completed a $24 million renovation project begun in 1996. Our parents went there, we go
there now and/or our kids do.
The hallowed portraits on brick have found their new places and you can almost
hear strains of "We dont need no education..." --In speaking with
the most current portrait subject (unidentified here for our protection)
Im told to call downtown for clearance, for electronic media releases.
That's understandable, since its moving day and the titanic preparation
must take precedence over my gnat-like intrusion. But isnt it in the Hard Knox U
curriculum that you go ahead and "Just Do It" because its easier
apologizing after-the-fact than begging in the first place?
Though GHS seemed unplugged for a time (August 98) it was only weeks away from being
wired; going into overtime/double-crewed and double-sized to be ready for returning
students with new gym, labs, systems.
This present student body appears to be much brighter than those
past. What with a famous ahtletic shoe firms support, new laptops for the teachers,
world-wide information in every classroom (modems screeching instead of the wobbly,
spinning globes we had) seems the current crowd is getting what they deserve, for being so
much smarter.
