Only for Old Willoughby'ites - Larry's Super Burger

Postby bunky » Wed Jul 19, 2006 6:59 am

Ok yall, dig deep. Years ago on the Big Bay side on the corner of 15th View on the Spit. I asked RK about this "memory" in my 55 yr old mind of a burger joint we kids used to go to. I had thought Miss Pookie Do herself worked there and RK in fact confirmed the burger joint named Larry's Super Burger and that Pookie indeed worked there.

Sooooooo OV 'ers/Willoughby'ites, dig out those old photos and send to RK so I can see them.

I don't think Pookie worked there per se, but may have helped out because David Blood was Pook's friend in those days --he lived upstairs over Larry's Super Burger. I knew David Fish who roomed with him along with Larry Weimer --who'd opened Larry's Super Bigger-- also Weimer had a sis, Annette who was a good pal of Pookie's.

Crazy days... I'd been seeing Larry Goodman... I remember the night Fish had called and asked me out, and an hour or so later, Goodman called. Every so tackily, I called & cancelled Fish.

Goodman picked me up and we went to the Ebb Tide-- the sons o'guns had bet on who I'd go out with. Clueless, I felt like a real rat when Fish walked in. Buttheads! I'd forgotten all this until you asked about Weimer's place. Ha ha-- thanks for the chuckle.

I'll try & dig up some pix.

Ollie Olsen

Postby Gladys Over » Tue Aug 01, 2006 6:34 am

Remember Ollie Olsen & his kid Ollie? They lived right next door to Bill Neff (who baretnded the Willoughby Inn & later worked the ABC store before & after the OV Shopping Center, in the duplex next door to the Willoughby Inn?

Young Ollie hit the median at the overpass in the 60's before 4th View and killed hisself in his sports car?

This recalls Alex Nicholson in Willoughby who also past in his early on. Unrealized potential

Whoa, taking us back!

Ollie/Bill Neff/Alex Nickelson

We knew Ollie and I remember when he got killed. There is still a stain in the road under the overpass from that car burning. Bill Neff was a cool guy. My uncle Roland Campbell was with him when he died. My cousin Chuck Campbell (Rolands nephew) was Alex's best friend for many years before Alex died. They were inseparable.

Ollie Olsen -- The Aces

Postby rkpuma » Sun Aug 06, 2006 10:56 am

Just received two photos of the Ocean View Aces Athletic Association-- circa 1960, submitted by Norman Wright. At the time, Larkin Barnett (Ahab's) and Barry John (also Ahab's owner but after taking over Drury Little's Dugout established it as the Thirsty Camel)-- anyway, in the 60's Larkin & Barry were co-chairmen of the Aces. Note also Jack Griswold whose family owned the Camel pre- "Dugout" days when it was a hardware store ( see Nickel Tour 1, last paragraph at http://www.rkpuma.com/ov/nickel1.htm for more ).

Coincidentally, we received these photos yesterday, and young Ollie Olsen can be seen at the left of this second photo, wearing a red helmet-like thing and a grin. The occasion was the Thole Street Fire Station, assisting the USMC with their annual "Toys for Tots" drive.

Norman included a uh, wild diagram which provided most names --but we apologize in advance, for errors/omissions, and will clarify if notified.

PS: there is also a topic here at the BullBoard on Larkin; see:

About Larry's Super Burger/Reply from Jim Griffin

Postby rkpuma » Wed Nov 12, 2008 4:43 pm

I'll post this for you without providing your email-- I don't want to update because the security on phpBB is terrible; I was glad when the registration bug appeared because I had spammers putting all kinds of icky stuff up here-- it became a 24/7 job. But I do post for people and likely some folks will answer back and I can forward email, or you can check back for replies at the BullBoard. --rk

Tried to register for your site, got only gibberish. This is intended for the thread about the store at the End. It was under Homey Topics, Aug 6, 2006 "Only for old Willoughby'ites; Larry's Super Burger.

Larry's Super Burger at the end of Willoughby. Larry Weimar (real name Clarence, which he did not use) lived at 1044 WOV  for several years with his mom and sister prior to opening his store. His mom rented the house from my parents, Viola and Dixie Griffin, also owners of Dixie's Grocery.Several years older than me, a good guy,as I recall. I used to play pinball at Larry's on occasion, after I finished (mis)delivering my brother's ( Joe Griffin,AKA Professor Griffin ) afternoon paper route for him, from 10th stop to 15th stop, when he went out of town. No idea what became of Larry...
