ON SUPERVISORS...

A Different Logic...

The Boss has a decidedly different LOGIC---
TO AVOID UNNECESSARY STRESS, tell the boss:

Getting ahead...Never give me work in the morning. Always wait until 5:00 and then bring it to me. The challenge of a deadline is refreshing.
Getting ahead...If it's really a "rush job," run in and interrupt me every 10 minutes to inquire how it's going. That helps.
Getting ahead...Always leave without telling anyone where you're going. It gives me a chance to be creative when someone asks where you are.
Getting ahead...If my arms are full of papers, boxes, books, or supplies, don't open the door for me. I need to learn how to function as a paraplegic and opening doors is good training.
Getting ahead...If you give me more than one job to do, don't tell me which is the priority. Let me guess.
Getting ahead...Do your best to keep me late. I like the office and really have nowhere to go or anything to do.
Getting ahead...If a job I do pleases you, keep it a secret. Leaks like that could cost me a promotion.
Getting ahead...If you don't like my work, tell everyone. I like my name to be popular in conversation.
Getting ahead...If you have special instructions for a job, don't write them down. In fact, save them until the job is almost done.
Getting ahead...Never introduce me to the people you're with. When you refer to them later, my shrewd deductions will identify them.
Getting ahead...Be nice to me only when the job I'm doing for you could really change your life.
Getting ahead...Tell me all your little problems. No one else has any and it's nice to know someone is less fortunate.
Getting ahead...Wait until my yearly review and THEN tell me what my goals SHOULD have been. Give me a mediocre performance rating with a cost of living increase. I'm not here for the money anyway.

To understand the subtle differences of thought processes,
DIFFERING VIEWS - YOU: & BOSS:

Getting ahead...YOU: Listen to the wisdom of your body. Begin to freely admit the stresses and pressures which have manifested physically, mentally, or emotionally.
BOSS: Work until the physical pain forces you into unconsciousness.
Getting ahead...YOU: Don't do everything alone! Develop or renew intimacies with friends and loved ones. Closeness not only brings new insights, but also is anathema to agitation and depression.
BOSS: Shut your office door and lock it from the inside so no one will distract you. They're just trying to hurt your productivity.
Getting ahead...YOU: If your job, your relationship, a situation, or a person is dragging you under, try to alter your circumstance, or if necessary, leave.
BOSS: If you feel something is dragging you down, suppress these thoughts. This is a weakness. Drink more coffee.
Getting ahead...YOU: Pinpoint those areas or aspects which summon up the most concentrated intensity and work toward alleviating that pressure.
BOSS: Increase intensity. Maximum intensity = maximum productivity. If you find yourself relaxed and with your mind wandering, you are probably having a detrimental effect on the recovery rate.
Getting ahead...YOU: If you routinely take on other people's problems and responsibilities, learn to gracefully disengage. Try to get some nurturing for yourself.
BOSS: Always attempt to do everything. You ARE responsible for it all. Perhaps you haven't thoroughly read your job description.
Getting ahead...YOU: You'll help diminish intensity by speaking up for yourself. This means refusing additional requests or demands on your time or emotions.
BOSS: Never say no to anything. It shows weakness, and lowers the research volume. Never put off until tomorrow what you can do at midnight.
Getting ahead...YOU: Learn to delegate, not only at work, but also at home and with friends. In this case, detachment means rescuing yourself for yourself.
BOSS: Delegating is a sign of weakness. If you want it done right, do it yourself (see ABOVE).
Getting ahead...YOU: Try to sort out the meaningful values from the temporary and fleeting, the essential from the nonessential. You'll conserve energy and time, and begin to feel more centered.
BOSS: Stop thinking about your own problems. This is selfish. If your values change, we will make an announcement at the Corporation meeting. Until then, if someone calls you and questions your priorities, tell them that you are unable to comment on this and give them the number for Community and Government Relations. It will be taken care of.
Getting ahead...YOU: Try to take life in moderation. You only have so much energy available. Ascertain what is wanted and needed in your life, then begin to balance work with love, pleasure, and relaxation.
BOSS: A balanced life is a myth perpetuated by liberal arts schools. Don't be a fool: the only thing that matters is work and productivity.
Getting ahead...YOU: Don't skip meals, abuse yourself with rigid diets, disregard your need for sleep, or break the doctor appointments. Take care of yourself nutritionally.
BOSS: Your body serves your mind, your mind serves the company. Push the mind and the body will follow. Drink Mountain Dew.
Getting ahead...YOU: Try to keep superstitious worrying to a minimum - it changes nothing. You'll have a better grip on your situation if you spend less time worrying and more time taking care of your real needs.
BOSS: If you're not worrying about work, you must not be very committed to it. We'll find someone who is.
Getting ahead...YOU: Begin to bring job and happy moments into your life. Very few people suffer burnout when they're having fun.
BOSS: So, you think you work is funny? We'll discuss this with your director on Friday, at 7:00 P.M.!

Other subtle differences,
DIFFERING PERFORMANCES:

Getting ahead... YOU: When you overlooked a rule of ettiquette, you're being rude.
BOSS: When your boss skips a few rules, he's being original.

Getting ahead...YOU: When you please your boss, you're "brown-nosing".
BOSS: When your boss pleases his boss, he's being co-operative.

Getting ahead... YOU: When you're out of the office, you're wandering around.
BOSS: When your boss is out of the office, he's on business.

Getting ahead...YOU: When you're on a day off sick, you're always sick.
BOSS: When your boss is a day off sick, he must be very ill.

Getting ahead... YOU: When you apply for leave, you must be going for an interview.
BOSS: When your boss applies for leave, it's because he's overworked.
